Is it ‘Dee-Santis’ or ‘Deh-Santis’ running for president?

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 22:27:16 GMT

Americans are getting to know Gov. Ron DeSantis as he mounts a bid for the White House. Now, they’ll have to figure out how to pronounce his last name. He’s gone back and forth between Dee-Santis and Deh-Santis over the years. In his presidential campaign launch ad on Wednesday night, he introduced himself as Dee-Santis, but in a follow-up video just a little later he went by the other one.The DeSantis campaign did not immediately respond to an inquiry Thursday into the preferred pronunciation. But the Dee-Santis or Deh-Santis question — albeit a trivial one — has prompted puzzlement for several years in Florida politics. As of late, it’s captured the attention of DeSantis’ political rival former President Donald Trump, who shared a Twitter post and video of the 44-year-old governor pronouncing his name differently. Twitter user “johnny maga” asked in the post, “Who changes the pronunciation of their own last name in their 40’s? Is there anything genuine about this guy?”Storms bring h...

Letters: Jeers for Lakers’ Lebron; tears for Broncos’ McManus

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 22:27:16 GMT

The King of sore losersNo question, the Nuggets are the best in the West. But No. 6 for the Los Angeles Lakers needs to go to learn better sportsmanship.Without a doubt, the King is one of the greatest of all time, but as a gracious loser and role model for being a good sport, he earns a 0 on his jersey. The King did not stay on the floor at the finish of the game as his teammates did, congratulating fellow players.Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus would shake hands, as did Ted Williams and Joe DiMaggio; tennis greats meet at the net; and Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes looked for each other at the end of the game.I believe I made my point that the King should change his name to Le Baby. King, grow up. There will always be room for one more loser.Jay Weinstein, DenverMcManus kicked to the curb too soonRe: “McManus announces the end to nine-year career in Denver,” May 24 sports storyI think the Broncos are going to regret letting Brandon McManus go. Opinion: Denver’s crime is rampant. These three city council candidates don’t support the police

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 22:27:16 GMT

Crime has hurt our community and our national reputation. And Denver voters should know before election day that two of the candidates for City Council have supported defunding or even abolishing the police, while a third candidate effectively tried to do the same with RTD’s police.Three years ago, Denver was ranked number two in the US News and World Report’s annual “Best Places to Live” survey.  In its most recent survey released this past week, Denver fell from 55th to 99th among 150 cities. An obvious factor in Denver’s precipitous fall from the top: crime rates. Denver is listed as the 15th most dangerous place to live in its survey. Let that sink in.Denver is ranked third in motor vehicle theft crime rates and sixth in property crime rates. Current data from the Denver Police Department’s website shows that over a 3-year average, violent crime is up almost 15%, with murders up by 11.5%. We also know that fentanyl cases filed by the Denver District Attorney have doubled ev...

3 cougar kittens born in Simi Hills: NPS

Published Fri, 21 Feb 2025 22:27:16 GMT

A mountain lion has given birth to three female kittens in the Simi Hills, the National Park Service announced. The mother, P-77, birthed P-113, P-114 and P-115 in the past few weeks. When NPS biologists found the kittens, they were 24 days old and nestled in a patch of poison oak between boulders in the hills, which are between the Santa Monica and Santa Susana mountains.Scientists inspected and measured each kitten, as well as tagging them for future tracking. The mother, who was tagged in the Simi Hills 2019, is believed to be 5 or 6 years old, and as an adult, she's settled in a patch between the 101 and 118 freeways, according to the NPS. Mountain lion struck and killed by vehicle in Simi Valley “It will be interesting to learn how these kittens will use the landscape once they get older and disperse, particularly if they decide to stay in the Simi Hills or cross freeways to enter larger natural areas,” said Jeff Sikich, the lead field biologist of the NPS mountain lion study. “...
