Behind the scenes, city and community workers fanned out to hospitals to provide support to loved ones and to try to keep anger from boiling over into retaliatory violence. It’s an example of the kind of work that’s underway in preventing, intervening and enforcing when it comes to gun violence, leaders of St. Paul’s Office of Neighborhood Safety, police, Parks and Recreation and Ramsey County’s Healing Streets told city council members Wednesday.Overall, gun crimes in St. Paul are down this year, compared with the same time last year. There have been 41 people shot, compared with 66 at this time last year, according to police statistics. After an eight-year experiment in extreme basketball patience, the Nuggets have 10 scant days to grow up and become a legitimate championship contender. The Nuggets don’t have another NBA season of center Nikola Jokic’s MVP prime to waste. It’s Finals or bust for Denver players who like to talk about it, but can’t seem to grasp the simple notion there’s zero room for excuses in a serious pursuit of the Larry O’Brien Trophy.Don’t know about you, but I’m tired of waiting for guard Jamal Murray to round into his NBA bubble form, forward Aaron Gordon to hit a wide-open jump shot and Denver bench players to develop a reliable winning identity. You can hear the tension growing in the voice of Michael Malone, who sounds like a coach feeling the pressure of championship expectations. Malone blasted his team after a dismal loss to lowly Houston that only encouraged doubters who’ve labeled the Nuggets a paper tiger in danger of a first-round flameout during the opening of the NBA playoffs...11-year-old girl killed, mother hospitalized in Redlands train crash

OAKLAND — Athletics designated hitter Jesus Aguilar wasn’t interested in reliving one of the most epic at-bats you’ll ever see in the aftermath of a 6-4, 10-inning loss Wednesday to the Cleveland Guardians. The A’s had done nothing and trailed 4-0 in the eighth until Ryan Noda led off with a solo home run to right off relief pitcher Nick Sandlin. Sandlin got the next two outs, giving way to Tim Herrin.Herrin walked the next two batters. Aguilar fell behind 0-2 and eventually worked the count to 2-2. He fouled off seven pitches in all, and finally on the 12th-pitch of the at-bat, launched a three-run game-tying home run left center. The next hitter, Seth Brown, nearly made it back-to-back home runs for a 5-4 A’s lead but his drive to center was caught at the fence by Myles Straw.“No one cares,” Aguilar said. “We want to win.
